Lenawee Mission

This month is National Homeless Awareness month and this week is National Homeless Awareness week. The Lenawee County Mission is sponsoring One Night Without a Home starting at 12 noon on Friday to 12 noon on Saturday to awareness of the problem of homelessness in Lenawee County and to raise funds for expansion of their programs. Groups from Adrian College, Jackson Community College, church groups and individuals will sleep overnight in cardboard boxes. The Mission runs two programs. The Life Change program is a yearlong program for homeless men who are fighting addictions. Fresh Start is a 90 day program for homeless men; fundamental needs are met while the men look for jobs. The Lenawee County Mission has been in existence since 2006. The executive director is Steven Palmer who has been in the post since 2007.

A man who was lauded as “a leader (who) has a passion for what he does” was honored Thursday with the Norma Dell “Courage to Care” Award by the Lenawee County Continuum of Care.
Capt. Gordon Knight of the Salvation Army received the award for his work in Lenawee County with the Continuum of Care, a group of 20 agencies and concerned citizens who work to meet the needs of the county’s homeless.

Turkey bowl

The Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity at Adrian College organized the Inaugural Turkey Bowl, a powder puff football game to raise money for the Daily Bread. They sold t-shirts and charged $1 or a canned good for admission to the event. Women from Alpha Phi, Delta Nu Kappa, Tau Kappa Epsilon, and Alpha Sigma Alpha made up the teams.
